Project:
Motiv Mirror is a mirror that helps motive people and make them feel good about themselves. It displays encouraging words across the mirror when people walk near it.

Issue:
We are trying to help motivate people and help them feel better about them selves.

Features:
It displays words across the mirror, may read the words out loud, and

We are using the Fab Lab, Scratch, Raspberry Pi and Lego WeDo.

Explore:

Ways to motivate through an lCD screen?

  • Give compliments through a mirror.
  • Whistle or call the user to come over to the mirror.
  • Text changes in size depending on how the mirror emphasizes its words!
  • Animate Characters or gestures (about 3 different images on repeat) to add life to the mirror.
  • Personalized messages are automatically triggered and delivered by a voice recording and text appearing on the mirror.
  • Messages are personalized for you depending on whether you have certain qualities (beard Skinn).

Ways to improve self-confidence:

  • Smile in the mirror. Do that every morning and you’ll start to see a big difference in your life/
  • The x effect method, One simple exercise that makes u confident
  • Look yourself in the eyes confidently. Put a light smile on your face so that you look determined. Start talking to your reflection. Say things like “I believe in myself!”, “I can!”, “Everyday I get 1% better.”, “I know what I want and aren’t afraid to get it.”Think about the things you want to achieve and say that you can get them, and there is nothing that can stop you on your way to success. Continue breathing as deep as you can and generate only positive statements and thoughts.Go on like that for at least 5-10 minutes.

How to make a speaking mirror:

  • Have a motion sensor to detect the person and have a program (Javascirpt? Scratch? Something?)
  • Put a LCD screen directly behind a one-way mirror and the display will “bleed through” your reflection.
  • Frame with one slot from the ir sensor (maybe speakers as well? On the side) (Maybe for a power switch as well? On the side)
  • Use a regular thin picture glass and use a one way tint to see through the other side.
  • Install one-way mirror > LCD > Buttons/IR Sensor/Speakers?
  • Polish the wood after cutting but before installing the mirror [2 coats of English chestnut stain and matte finish later.]
  • Arcylic Mirror (Used to magically create a one sided mirror) (Possible Mirror Firm)

Day 1– 7/8/2015


Goals-
Complete a rapid prototype of our ideas.

Summary-
Cedric and Hector completed a rapid prototype and then went up to present and explain what we wanted to including in our mirror.

Day 2– 7/9/2015


Goals-
Create a mini prototype of our ideas and start thinking what we want to incorporate in our mirror and what we need to do.

Summary-
We cut out a tiny prototype of the mirror could possibly look like and thought of how it could work.

Problems/ Complications-
We didn’t want our hardware components to spill out from behind the screen.

Overcoming Problems-
We started thinking of better ways the mirror could be modeled- should it have a boxed frame to hold the contents?

Day 3– 7/13/2015


Goals-
Get the wiki page started and finish the documentation of our work, take pictures, work on our team logo and do some of the coding.

Summary-
Daleshka worked on the documentation on the wiki page, took pictures, and worked on a scratch program to make words appear. Hector worked on our logo in the fab lab. Cedric worked on the code we will use in our mirror and used Lego WeDo to see how we could possibly make the program work and the mirror interact.

Problems/ Complications-
The internet at SETC was out most of the day so we had issues with that and our wiki page got deleted by accident. The laser cutters in the Fab Lab would not work so we couldn’t cut out our second prototype.

Overcoming Problems-
We will redo our wiki page tomorrow and hopefully have no connection problems with the internet. Once the laser cutter starts working we will work on our prototype.

Day 4– 7/14/2015


Goals-
Cut out our prototype, work on our programming, and get our wiki page up and running completely. Finish or be nearly done with our exploration part of the project.

Summary-
Daleshka worked on the documentation on the wiki page and getting it started. Hector worked on cutting out our prototype in the fab lab. Cedric did lots of research and exploration to see what could help develop our project further.

Problems/ Complications-
We tried to get the prototype cut but there were complications in the Fab Lab.

Overcoming Problems-
We will wait until the Fab Lab is up and running so we can keep going.

Day 5– 7/15/2015


Goals-
Get our materials listed so they can be ordered, learn how to work with a Raspberry Pi, and get our roles assigned as well as completing our logo and our Exploration page and working on  our Scratch program.

Problems/ Complications-
Our logo was deleted.

Overcoming Problems-
Hector will have to redo it.

Technologies Used-
We used Lego WeDo, Scratch, and the Fab Lab.

Day 6– 7/16/2015


Goals-
Finish our logo and work on our programming.

Summary-
Hector did another modified logo based off our first logo, while the others worked on the programming.

Day 7– 7/20/2015


Goals-
Record the quotes we will use for our mirror, work and complete our scratch program using the recordings and working on the Raspberry Pi since we don’t have our hardware. Work on our scratch program, start working on uploading it on the Raspberry Pi as well as setting it up using NOOBS and Raspbian.

Problems/ Complications-
The recording studio is unavailable due to flooding, mildew, and mold.

Overcoming Problems-
We will have to find another way to record the quotes.

Goals-
Record the quotes being read out loud, finish working on and perfect our scratch program and use it on our LCD screen.

Summary-
What we did yesterday was trying to get internet on the Raspberry Pi to put music on the Raspberry Pi to see if music will work on it, but we couldn’t get the internet on it. So we tried to put music on an SD card, but we were struggling to to it because we didn’t know how to do it we finished recording music on the recorder.

Problems/ Complications-
Didn’t get the Raspberry Pi music.

Raspberry Pi, Scratch, and recorder.

Day 9– 7/22/2015


Goals-
Our goal for today was to record someone saying the quotes. Get the Scratch program done. Make the Raspberry Pi make sounds.

Problems/ Complications-
Getting the ethernet cable the put internet on the Raspberry Pi. Putting music on the SD card. The recorder froze so we weren’t able to get the recorded quotes off it.

Overcoming Problems-
Try again tomorrow. Wait until the recorder dies, recharge it and see if it still functions.
